Zoë and Jenny will be at King Con in Durham, North-East England on Sunday 15 October. The new All Over the House and Nob Mouse collections will be on sale, as will Jennifer’s phenomenal Stars novels (Bringing Home The Stars and Twinkle Little Star).
We will both be signing books and Zoë will be doing sketches. If you’re in the area, please do stop by. We are on the Circle Level of the convention, in the Gala Theatre.
For the background of today’s comic, I needed to draw the first three Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom, from back in the reign of King George I. Those Prime Ministers are: Sir Robert Walpole (later Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford, KG, KB, PC), Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington KG, KB, PC and Henry Pelham, FRS.
The sketches are based on portraits available through WikiMedia. I’ve saved the sketches so I can add them into the background of later comics; in the same way that I re-use the paintings in Emily and Tesrin’s houses. This should speed up the comic sketching process.
In the five years since Jennifer and I started All Over the House, I’ve tried to better my artwork at every stage. We have experimented with a variety of different styles, from monochrome characters and bare whitespace backgrounds; to no-outline backgrounds; to crosshatch shading; to standard shading; to no shading. It’s been a long and winding road.
Now we’ve taken a short break to decide what the next step is with the comic. During this break I’ve taken up the task of redesigning the characters. I’ve been unhappy with the look of the cast for a while now – they’ve become thin and angular, which goes against our ongoing plotline of Tesrin’s chocolate addiction. If she’s constantly craving chocolate and eating it at every opportunity, how is she still so thin she would snap in a stiff breeze? It doesn’t make sense.
When we come back from this quick break, you’ll see some more realistically-proportioned characters. I think this is an excellent next step in the art progression of the comic.
In the mean time, here’s an early draft of the new-look Emily. It’s by no means the final design we will use (and even the final design won’t be the final design – the art will continue to evolve over time) but it’s a good idea of the improvements I’ve already started making.
Jennifer and I often have quick “script meetings” to discuss the comic and decide how we will set out each episode. Sometimes we only do one comic per meeting, sometimes we plough through a load of strips in one session.
We thought some readers might appreciate a chance to look behind the scenes, so I recorded one of our recent sessions in which we put together yesterday’s Dave The Rozzer story as well as the recent “cursed paint” episode. Enjoy! 😀
Hello and welcome back to All Over the House. It’s a new site, a new look for the comic and a fresh start. As long-time readers may already know, All Over the House is published by All Mouse Media Ltd. A few years ago we started discussing the possibility to consolidating all the comics published by AMM into one big site. We have now started that process.
The comic itself will not change and you will still be able to go to www.alloverthehouse.net to access the site. The only things that are changing are really behind-the-scenes things. The only cosmetic difference is that all the AMM comics will now have a similar look to their websites; which we honestly think will make navigation easier on each comic.
The process of migration is taking a bit of time so we’ll probably not get back to regular updates until tomorrow at the earliest. We’ll keep you informed as we go on.
